How is a culture built?
Corporations, colleges, and communities have spent millions trying to answer this question. The answer, whether you aim for collaboration or competitiveness, is the same: conversations. Conversations build your culture.
Seth Godin writes in The Icarus Deception,
Everyone we interact with is changed forever. The only questions are:
How will they be different? How different will they be?
Our conversations change others. They are the building blocks to every relationship. And although not ideal, our emails, text messages, and social media posts are part of the mix. So are the conversations we have with ourselves- they are the most important ones of all.
So before starting another culture building initiative, exam the health of your relationships. If you don’t like what you see, then it’s time for a conversation shift so you can build the peloton you desire.

p.s. A few weeks ago Netflix’s released 13 Reasons Why. It’s a new series that examines teenage suicide. The series isn’t perfect and its flaws have been highlighted by mental health experts.
