There's No App For That - Leadership SHIFT Tip

During a home visit a few months ago, I started flipping through old photos. Like most babies, my smile came easy. It reminded me that we are born happy and without a worry in the world.

During the World Happiness Summit, I listened to Mo Gawdat, Chief Business Officer for Google X. He shared a similar perspective and valuable analogy.

When we purchase a new smartphone or computer, its performance is great. The battery lasts forever. Everything works as advertised. It easily puts a smile on our face.

Then we start to add apps and functionality. Its performance slips. The battery lasts just a few hours before we frantically search for an outlet. We grow irritated with the damn spinning circle and hit command+option+esc to reboot. But it doesn't fix our core issue. We begin to believe that the next version will make us happy.

Are we mimicking our phones or vice versa as we rush around without focus and mindfulness?

Happiness requires a sound operating system that includes spiritual, emotional, physical, and social wellness. Without them, we will keep spinning, adding apps, and calling the genius bar when things don't go our way. Yes, the new release will be out soon enough, but the best shift is when we adjust our settings.

After all, your beautiful smile and happiness are found within your core, and there is no app for that.

This week's SHIFT Tip recommendation is to check out Mo's Solve for Happy campaign for 10 Million Happy.
