Put 'em up, Put 'em up! - Leadership SHIFT Tip
It comes when we are doing something new like learning how to swim or telling a story from the stage. What if I sink? What if I stink?
It comes when someone is challenging our perspective or before shipping something new like a book, project, or product. What if I’m wrong? What if people don’t like it?
It comes when we are reaching the next level or don’t feel in control. What if I’m not that good? What if others take advantage?
It comes when we are the first to share a dissenting opinion or standing up to the bully. What if there are consequences? What if he pushes back?
It thinks it’s protecting us but the resistance of fear holds us back from taking smart risks and being our best.
Courage gives us the ability to acknowledge our emotions, to be vulnerable, and honor our boundaries and values.
Courage is a habit we develop over time and gives us the strength to push forward in spite of our fear.
“Courage is a habit-you get it by courageous acts.
It’s like you learn to swim by swimming. You learn courage by couraging.”
- Mary Daly
Courage gives us the confidence to tell our story- because everyone has a story worth sharing.
It’s also valuable when facing lions and tigers and bears (oh my).
Have fun storming the castle, but remember it takes courage to do so.
