What are you putting in your glass? - Leadership SHIFT Tip

Early in my marketing career, and shortly after moving to New Jersey, I was attending an advisory board meeting. During dinner, one of our faculty advisors asked my opinion on The Garden State.

He caught me at a weak moment — I was missing D.C. I don’t remember what I said, but I was complaining and probably said something snarky about the eyesore known as exits 13 to 15 on the New Jersey Turnpike.

In a polite exchange, he offered his view. He saw that part of the state as a mobility wonderment of planes, ships, trains, and autos that were helping connect the world and bringing us closer to together.

As he was sharing his view, I just wanted to slide under the table and sneak off to my hotel room. I felt small for complaining. His lesson was clear: perspective matters.

I remembered this moment as I was driving through the Lincoln TunnelMonday night after speaking at Unlearings. During the Q and A, someone asked me how I dealt with people telling me I was lucky or that God was looking out for me on my Last Bad Day. In this week’s video Shift Tip, I share my perspective.

In the video, I reference World Bicycle Relief and Charity Water. If you have a moment, please visit their sites to discover how they are helping others maximize their 23,000 breaths each day.
