Advice to a 27 Year Old - Leadership SHIFT Tip

What advice would you give to the 27-year-old version of yourself?

Out of the blue, that was the question my row mate in 23A asked as we were approaching Newark airport.  Up until that moment, it was a quiet flight except for the multiple times he got up to use the restroom.

I guess his four United Airlines' Merlots got him a little chatty.  Yes, you read that correctly, and you know the flight from Dallas ain't that long.

There was plenty I wanted to share, but we didn't have much time.

I asked him if he had a gratitude practice? With a slight tilt of his head, he gave me a look - you know the one. That four glasses of wine at altitude "what are you talking about" look. Well, he didn't have one. To be fair, at 27 I didn't have one either.

So I suggested that he spend five minutes before bed reflecting on the day's beautiful micro to macro moments. I also shared that he could express gratitude for his struggles because they will make him better in the long run.

With a bouquet of New York skepticism, he asked, "Will this really work???" "Well, it works better than bad Merlot," I said.  I went on to share that, "Gratitude is the shift that helps us see what still have and can do. It's a valuable practice that works when your 27, 37, or 47."

It can work for the 27-year-old in 23A, and it can work for you as well.

Oh, I also hinted that a big glass of water before bed might be a wise choice because it's hard to be grateful for a hangover.
